Ian Cox

Ian has over 18 years’ experience in electrical engineering, from data, instrumentation and control to low/high voltage (HV) distribution and earthing.

He has a thorough understanding of all aspects of electrical assets’ life cycle from specification, design, and construction through to operations, maintenance and retirement of the asset. In addition, he is trained in HV operating and isolation planning and has gained experience in project delivery and operations. Ian has extensive experience in the upgrade of high voltage and low voltage assets including poles and wires, substations, Motor Control Centres and drives. Ian has worked in coal, minerals, metals, water, power and ports. Ian’s diverse engineering experience gives him insight that translates into safe, fit for purpose and commercially responsible designs.

Track Record

  • As the High Voltage Installation Responsible Person (HVI RP) at Hunter Water Corporations, Ian oversaw high voltage upgrades, created high voltage standards, developed and integrated the HV preventive maintenance system, overhauled the Installation Safety Management Plan, specified minimum competencies, and developed training and induction programs. In addition, Ian defined, reviewed, and approved all HV alterations and upgrades.
  • Ian was on the project team to upgrade substations (33) and approximately 100km of 33kV and 11kV distribution substations, switch gear, HV drives and switch rooms. Ian successfully developed strategies and risk management processes that allowed for the continued operation of key Hunter Water Corporation assets while maintaining safety.
  • He was the design manager for the Hunter Valley Overhead Line Distribution Feasibility Study for Hunter Valley Operations into the relocation of 11/33/66/132kV assets out of the proposed mine shell footprint. Ian successfully navigated the dynamic nature of multiple independent and co-dependent feasibility studies from multiple consultancies and included surface water management, conveyors, roads and environmental management.
  • Ian assisted Hydro Aluminium to deliver their capital program. He was based at the site engineering office and quickly learnt the importance of design and delivery of quality projects. He also assisted Hydro Aluminium in their capital expenditure planning, to reach their expenditure targets and provide technical support to Hydro Aluminium maintenance services.
