Julian is an extremely experienced mining professional with over 30 years of experience in managing mining operations, construction of mines and ports, resource evaluation and project delivery. Julian is commercially astute with the ability to identify value improvement opportunities as well as demonstrated his ability to implement planning processes to ensure line of sight between business plans and day to day operation. He has led major organisational change, including culture change and organisational restructure of multiple sites, improvements to safety and health systems, and implementation of initiatives to reduce unit costs

Julian's Track Record

As the Project Manager – Air at Bechtel (Nuclear, Security & Environmental) he was responsibility for Supporting the Air Domain of the Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group in the Department of Defence to implement reforms resulting from the First Principles Review. This included implementing business improvement initiatives including risk-based project execution strategies, balanced matrix organisation and project assurance activities. 

Julian was the General Manager at Cook Colliery and was the Site Senior Executive leading management intervention to improve safety, production and cost performance. He was focus on changing the organisational structure from a shift-based to modern process-focused structure. He also led the successful recovery of the longwall face from a perilous situation.

As Principal Consultant with Asute Resources, Julian was responsibility for leading coal mine investment due diligence, EPC/EPCM bid management and, operational advice.

At Bechtel (Mining & Metals) as an Operations Manager (Asia Pacific) he led the EPCM project teams delivering BHP's $10 billion pipeline of metallurgical coal projects and an expansion of the Kooragang coal terminal at Newcastle. He led teams delivering feasibility studies for one brownfield expansion and two Greenfield coal mines. Further as the SSE, he identified and implemented major improvements to the safety and health management system for the Caval Ridge Construction Mine.

Julian has led teams constructing two Greenfield surface coal mines (Caval Ridge and Daunia), three mine upgrades (South Walker Creek, Groote Eylandt (manganese) and Broadmeadow Sustaining Operations), and two coal terminal expansions (Hay Point and Kooragang). All projects were delivered safely, on time and under budget.

As the Chief Operating Office at Bowen Central Coal Management Pty Ltd, he managed the activities of the Bowen Central Coal and Isaac Plains Coal Joint Ventures (JV) on behalf of the participants Vale and Aquila Resources Limited. He led the geological assessment and mine strategy development of the Eagle Downs underground coal deposit and was responsible for both negotiation of rail and port access (QR/GAPE and Abbott Point). He also was responsibility for delivered the pre-feasibility study on time and budget (study budget $25M).
