Rafael is a highly experienced mechanical engineer with over 32 years’ experience in capital project delivery, engineering, and asset management.

He has worked in a broad range of industries including mining, heavy manufacturing, and engineering consulting with has significant senior leadership experience. Rafael brings a wealth of knowledge and a wide range of experience in capital project execution, feasibility studies and operations. Rafael’s deep experience encompasses delivery of many significant infrastructure projects and upgrades, and integration of new equipment systems. He has a strong focus on safety, stakeholder and risk management, compliance, and reliability.

Track Record

  • Rafael has undertaken numerous technically complex and significant capital projects (infrastructure & CHPP) and maintenance improvement projects for companies such as Bloomfield Coal, Centennial, Bengalla and Sedgman.
  • Working through the project delivery phases (pre-feasibility to construction and commissioning) he has successfully executed complex, multidiscipline and time critical projects utilising his strong leadership, stakeholder engagement and contractual management skills.
  • He was the client-side project lead for the feasibility study to restart operations of Baal Bone Colliery mine infrastructure after a period of in-care & maintenance, including capital estimate development, condition & risk assessment of plant, preliminary project schedule and feasibility report.
  • Rafael was the project manager for the environmental dust hoods for the 250T ROM bins (truck unloading) that significantly reduced dust emissions for the MTW North CHPP.
  • He was the project lead for Rio Tinto’s train loading system improvements across the iron ore operations in the Pilbara consisting of 7 sites. This resulted in a 2-3% increase in railed tonnes and improvements to rail safety.
  • Rafael has led development and implementation projects including asset improvement strategies, group-wide engineering and reliability improvement programs, engineering systems development and site wide condition assessments: New Hope, Whitehaven and Onesteel.
